Norsk Tipping under investigation over self-exclusion app error

Lotteritilsynet is investigating if Norsk Tipping breached regulations after players were unable to block themselves from accessing the monopoly operator’s mobile app.

The Norwegian gambling regulator’s inquiry comes after reports that one or more customers experienced issues with the app’s self-exclusion feature. Although Norsk Tipping proactively reported the self-exclusion app issue to the NGA, the regulator deemed further investigation necessary. 

First reported by NTB, the investigation cited a letter from the NGA to the gambling company in question which outlined the regulator’s concerns and states that the authority has found “grounds to carry out an inspection to investigate whether the incident involves a breach of provisions laid down in or based on the Gambling Act.”

The scrutiny comes not long after Norsk Tipping was fined £320,000 for breaching AML protocols. 

NGA Senior Adviser, Anya Markhus, confirmed that the app’s failure allowed players to bypass self-exclusion for a time.

“We can confirm that the discrepancy is related to the fact that player(s) were not allowed to lock themselves out via the app for a period of time,” Markhus told NTB. Norsk Tipping has since addressed the issue. 

“This is a case that dates back some time, and the error has been corrected,” added Communications Adviser Anne Marit Sletten.
